Menopause alternative medicine and treatments

Many women are concerned these days that the treatments for menopause that are prescribed by their doctors may not be 100% safe, or even effective. The reason for this is the recent studies that show how hormone replacement therapy (or HRT) has been shown to cause an increase in the cancer rates for women that are taking this treatment. So whom, or what treatment, can a woman trust?

Actually there are several natural treatments for menopause symptoms, some that have been studied by medical science and others that have been around for many centuries for this purpose but have not been actually proven in a scientific setting. The natural alternatives I'm speaking about are the herbal remedies for menopause, in particular black cohosh, licorice, red clover, milk thistel, dong quai, primrose oil, theanine, and ginseng, to name a few. Black cohosh in particular has been used for hundreds of years for menopause treatment, and is safe enough to be sold over the counter in most grocery stores these days.

Besides these fairly common herbs, there are other alternatives to treat menopause symptoms as well. Foods such as soy have been known to help ease the discomfort of hot flashes, although this is not an instant cure. The chemical nature of soy will over time help ease the symptoms, but this is a gradual process and only a small part of the regimene that a woman should use to lessen the symptoms. An alternative diet in general should be applied, with natural foods such as whole fruits and vegetables, whole grain cereals and breads, and recipes that include soy in them as a normal part of the diet.

There are also creams made with a natural substance that is very similar to the hormones in a womans body, and these natural estrogen creams can be a real life-saver for many women. Since they are commonly made from plant extracts, these estrogen creams are very safe, and the word is out that many women find them effective as well for relieving their symptoms. Just rub the cream directly on the skin, either the arms, legs, or other affected areas of the body, and they can start to work by being absorbed into the skin.

Some of these natural creams have other ingredients in them, including progesterone and even testosterone, which is a male hormone. The reason for this is that some women suffer from lack of sex drive during the menopausal years and this can actually boost the libido. In addition to the benefits of easing the symptoms of menopause, natural estrogen creams can also be a healthier alternative to HRT, which research has shown to increase heart disease, stroke risks, and even raise cancer rates in women that take HRT for longer periods. Estrogen cream, on the other hand, has been reported by some doctors to improve blood pressure and triglyceride levels in many women. It can also lower the levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), one of the markers of harmful inflammation in the arteries that can lead to blood clots.
